Warcry = Hobby joy

warcry header

Hello all.

So Warcry. Have you all had a go? I did with Alex of Leadballoony a few weeks back and I have to say it was a breath of hobby fresh air to me. So much so that we made a plan to get a warband each together with the aim of kicking each others butt and, of course me being me, I decided to create a whole board just to play on. That’s what I’ve been busy with this weekend and this is the result so far.

Taking inspiration from the Realm of Chaos books of yore I set out to create a desolate chaos waste land with a particular attention to textures. These textures were achieved a number of ways. The first was the longest process and it was done by leaving my used IPA ( isopropyl alcohol ) out in the sun and elements for 8 months. The IPA is used to clean resin 3D prints and so once the weather had done it’s thing I was left with very textured lumps of solid resin, perfect for terrain. The second is the use of modeling paste from an art store. Great stuff! You can shape it and stick things in it and create some pretty cool effects. Third is good old GW texture paints and last is sand, small slate and gravel. The section in the middle will be a nasty looking river in which I hope to drown some of Alex’s war band of self righteous elves. 😉

Well I hope you like what you see and I’ll leave you with a couple of images of the first character of my war band. The Unmade!!

  1. Aaaah I’m very glad to see you endorsing warcry! Since I’ve started hobbying again about a year ago, I’ve bounced from AoS to free rulesets to skirmish, never quite finding the right fit. Warcry has been the perfect answer, especially since I’m with non-wargaming relatives. I love the clear filiation with realms of chaos, the dynamic and random gameplay… Of course I wish it was even more than it is, but it’s a perfect starting point for narrative gaming.

Your board looks really cool, and you’ve managed to give that chaos wastes vibe to some terrain elements that can be a bit too cheesy on their own. The crying skull in particular is a great idea. Are you planning on having modular elements as well? I think it can really help to vary the layouts, but it seems challenging with such an irregular surface.

I’ll be waiting to see what’s next. I like instagram, but nothing is like a good blog post with a warm beverage…

    1. It’s one of the best rule sets I’ve played in a long while and will lend itself well to Aos28. Thanks for liking and yes I may do some modular elements just to mix things up a bit.

  2. Love that terrain board, it is a game I’m keen to try.

    Cheers,

    Pete.

    1. It’s easy to pick up and fast paced with some brutal combos. Loads of fun!

  3. Must admot i am not at all up to date on what Warcry is, this terrian is pretty great looking.

    1. Thank you. Take a look it’s really quite a good game and the models are ace!

  4. Brilliant mate – that’s a helluva board!! I suppose I’d better pull my finger out & actually get some hobby done!

    1. Thanks dude and yes you should 😝

  5. Yup, if I’d been asked to guess which warband you’d have gone for I’d have said Unmade – looking forward to seeing what you do with the rest of them. 🙂 Love the look of that board too very Realms of Chaos, it’s going to look amazing when it’s painted.

    1. I’m converting and painting one at a time so at this rate I should be done by Christmas 😝 saying that I really want to play with them so I’ll pull my finger out and get them done. Contrast paints help. Glad you like the board mate it would be great one day to meet up and have a battle.

      1. I know that feeling all too well, I reckon if I just get my head down and crack on with painting I should have everything done by the time the 41st millennium actually rolls around…

That would be great – if only we’d known each other a few years ago when I lived nearer your neck of the woods. Ever considered moving to the north of Scotland? It really is very nice up here 😀 Otherwise next time I’m down your way with time to spare you’ll be the first to know 🙂
