The Heptameron.

The call has been sent and for those who heard it destiny awaits. The Ostium Guides wage their war on the rising Wytch Cults, whilst guiding the travelers that have come from afar. The sentinels test and more often than not destroy those who the Guides bring to the entrance ways, for some travelers are deemed too dangerous or tainted and must not be allowed to gain access to the power that resides within.

These events are the beginnings of troubled times and with sightings of The Angel of the Gathering Blood those times are about to get worse. The rise of The Heptameron will happen once again and the power at the core will be its prize. Those who have heeded the call whether for glory or for gain will be sorely tested as those who dwell near the core rise up to face the chaos that would lay claim to this most haunted and precious of worlds. The knowledge kept within must never fall to The Heptameron.

Those who have dwelt within the dark places of the hive heed the call of the Angel and they gather to do their dark masters bidding. With the uprising of cults comes the retaliation of the pure of soul and wars break out all over the hive. Worker gangs will bleed and die to defend the colossal air vents and processors they toil over. Mighty guardians will be stirred once again to defend the secrets they guard. Forgotten nightmares will haunt the depths and the travellers who have fought this far will come face to face with their destiny.

The seven days of The Heptameron starts anew and the fight for The Chapel will begin again.

Hello one and all!

So as you’ve just read I’ve been thinking about the Chapel and have started to piece together ideas for the next game. It’s all been going rather well and I’ve got a lot to show you all in the coming months. So lets start with this evil-looking character. A member of the Heptameron, mutated and full of sorceress power he is a powerful psyker. Floating around while green flame dances at his feet he blasts his enemies with his crystal glare, for he is favoured by the dark god he serves.

I didn’t spend much time on this model and managed to paint him in one sitting. Not my best work by a long shot but he was fun to make and the model is a trial for a new item in my shop. What do you guys think?

Penitent Poles

Greetings all!

I’ve been away from the hobby for a while due to getting married in Oz last month and all the life comings and goings that goes with it. Now though I’m back on it, and oh how I’ve missed it 😉 Also it looks like I have loads to catch up on to. You busy bunch!

So to kick things off I’d like to introduce a concept for a game called Penitent Poles but before I do let me introduce a couple of misguided loons.

The penitent poles

These two used to have the holy task of maintaining servo skulls but after many years they have lost their minds and now they jump from penitent pole to penitent pole capturing servo skulls and messing with their protocols before sending them on their way to do god knows what to who. Insanity rules the Imperium of man so they say and these two wayward souls are testament to that.

Right so the game will go like this : Two teams of three take to a board made up of penitent poles with the aim to knock off or kill each other. Sounds simple yes? But wait, servo skulls will be floating around the place. You will be able to capture these and set them against your enemy but your enemy can recapture them and turn them back against you also. This will be determined by a series of dice rolls which I’ll think on a bit more. To add to the mayhem some of the poles will be occupied by penitents and these are best avoided but that’s not always going to be the case and you may find yourself tackling a truly insane soul hell-bent on killing you for disturbing his/her penance.

Obviously this still needs a lot of thought but I think it’ll be great fun and games will be quick as the board won’t be that big. I will be creating mine starting now as this is a precursor to the next Chapel, which I have also been working on.

So any thoughts or suggestions are welcome and once it’s all done I’d like the opportunity to knock a few of you off your poles 😉

CYBERPUNK 40K. Bringing the neon to the grim dark.

cyberpunk40k

That’s right! I want to bring out the elements of 40K that are totally Cyberpunk. Why? Because I love Cyberpunk and with the release of Necromunda it is the perfect playground for such a thing.

First off, if you want to know more about Cyberpunk, have a read of this article on the subject. It’s well written and will give you a nice overview of the history of the sub genre and the films that were produced that shaped the style.

So recently I’ve been going back to my roots of sci-fi with the main focus on films like Akira, GiTS, Blade Runner and Johnny Mnemonic as well as artists like Simon Bisley, Kev Walker and Brom. Also the new releases on Netflix like BLAME, The Expanse and Altered Carbon have all got me thinking about applying cyberpunk themes to 40k and creating a gang of characters that are so wonderfully over the top and Cyberpunk that it hurts. Now 40K has a lot of Cyberpunk imagery already, just have a flick through Rogue Trader and you’ll see what I mean, so it is just a matter of focusing on the styles and colours that define Cyberpunk and bring them into the grim dark. As far as models are concerned the new plastic Necromunda models suit the imagery perfectly, as they should being largely inspired by what came before, but other manufacturers of miniatures will be used as well, along with my own designs that I’ll 3D print.

First up we have this lovely lady. Poison Shade. She’s bad, really bad. A pumped up, psycho poser with cannibalistic tendencies that loves blades and more blades, especially ones covered in poison. She’s quick, acrobatic and extremely strong and loves nothing more than being dominant over everyone, especially men, whom she’s been known to eat for breakfast with a nice hot mocha after killing them with her butt cheeks. Miss Shade is all scary and has made a living from being so. Hire her at your peril and desperate men beware. So ladies and gents cover your crotch as I present…………..

PS1

The main influence for this character came from the art of Simon Bisley. I’ve been a great lover of his in your face art for many years and I remember as a teenager being totally in awe of his style. His depictions of characters are wonderfully insane and so very over the top, especially his women characters. They are exaggerated to the point of being grotesque but even so you can’t help but look and you end up feeling dirty for doing so. No wonder I loved his work as a teenager 🙂 His art also possesses a vibrancy, a toxic overload of colour, which compliments his larger than life characters perfectly. That’s what I have tried to achieve with Miss Shade here. A toxic psycho you wouldn’t want to meet in a dark ally while boozed up and fiddling with your fly. You know it’s all going to end wrong.

PS2

This will be an ongoing project with no real-time limit and if any of you lovely creative readers want to get involved and poke some fun at 40K then please feel free.

Spore Herders

Greetings contaminated ones! Today see’s me reveal my contribution to the Nestorian Infestation by the talented Tommy , Helge  and Alexander. The project has been raging for a while and when Tommy put out the word that they’d like fellow hobby nuts to create some NPC characters for the games I thought hell yeah! So here they are, the twisted, mutated, contaminated beyond belief, once human, vermin, the Spore Herders.

spore herders1

Spore Herders are the lowest of the low and in the hell that is Nestorian that’s pretty bad. They are small and hunched in stature and heavily mutated by the infestation and spore they herd around, keep as pets and sometimes eat. Malicious to the bone and creepy they skulk around in the shadows stabbing at any who pass by too closely with their rusting blades and have a hissing laugh as they do so. At best they are deemed a hinderance but they do keep a lot of the floating spore in check, a job it seems that they took upon themselves like it’s instinctual.

So there you have it, nasty little blighter’s in a blighted world. Hope you like them 🙂

In Midnight Clad

Just before Christmas last year I got a package in the mail. Inside this package was a beast of a Space Marine from the very talented and generous Wier brothers of Between the Bolter and me. Now I felt like Christmas had come early! So I sat down at my bench and poured out the bits. Cast in a white resin the finish was really good and the parts went together nicely, with enough spares to have fun with later. Once I’d done a load if fiddling around with white tak I sat back and looked at this monster of a Marine. He’s tall! Primarch tall and an imposing sight. This all added to the conundrum of what colours to paint him. I wanted to do it justice and I knew I wanted to do something I hadn’t done before, so after I’d completed the posing and the bits additions and placed him on a base, I left him on the bench for a while, a menacing presence out the corner of my eye as I worked on other models and gave him thought.

I’d already had an idea for him but I wanted to be sure and I went through all the chapters but I was destined to come back to the original idea. In Midnight Clad! The Night Lords. One of my favorite Legions and also one that I have never in my long years in this hobby have painted. Perfect choice.

Night Lords in my view should be dark. Not blue like some are painted but the colour of blue-tinted night and that’s what I’ve tried to achieve here. It was a challenge to paint as I’d also never attempted painting lightning before and this proved to be very difficult and sorely tested my free hand skills, something I really need to brush up on ( pun intended 😉 Below you can see the result and while I’m happy enough with it I can see room for improvement and I may go back over it to see if I can add to it in the future.

The character idea for him was one of a hunter. A cold hearted killer who does it for fun. I think the gun the Wiers made is fantastic and suits this sort of image.

Getting the chance to paint a model like this is awesome and as with all models you should learn something new. I have with this one as it pushed me to do something I’d never done before and try new ways of painting, like using pigments for shading to try to capture the effect of shadows on his armour, lightning moving across his armoured plates and painting night shade blue. It was a wonderful model to work on and thank you to the Wiers for sending it.

Inquisitor Gale

Gellath logo

Gale studied the map with his cold eyes. This mission was going to be delicate and he had no room for error. A meeting had been set, probably the first of many he thought as a sense of dread poured over him. This was not a sensation he was used to so he made his way to his drinks cabinet and soothed himself with a glass of fine Amasec. Sighing he placed the glass down and looked out the window to the dark moon they were in orbit around. No one came to this moon unless they were mad, desperate or invited, Gale felt like all those things and for a moment doubt crossed him as to his resolve and that this, no matter how dangerous, was the right course of action.

“ Are you alright my lord?” said a soft voice behind him.

Gale turned to see Mercy looking at him. He hadn’t heard her enter the room, not that that was surprising she did hover around everywhere after all.

“ Yes I’m fine thank you Mercy. Have you rested well?” He asked.

“ Oh yes. As well as I always do.” She replied.

Gale turned back to the moon it’s darkness a shroud over everything on it’s surface. Mercy floated up next to him and said.

“ It’s a dark place my lord. It’s almost as if it consumes light itself. I can feel it to.”

Gale nodded. He was sure she could. Her mind was so much more powerful than his and also more sensitive. The moon was emitting something.

“ Explain to me what you feel?” He asked her.

“ Bitter hatred, shame and lose. It’s like the moon is trying to hide by not being welcoming. It’s telling me to stay away.”

Gale nodded.

“ I’ve heard tales that any one who lands here uninvited never leave. On Guylath I met a man who had told me of his great grandfather who got stuck out here and sent a signal which told whoever was listening that he will make a emergency landing on this moon. That was the last they heard of him. There were many stories like that on Guylath but no one really knows what happens on this moon as they are all too fearful of it and they are right to be as well.”

Gale picked up his glass and took another sip.

“ Who are they?” Mercy asked

Gale looked at her and held up the map for her to see.

“ It’s taken me two years and many Astropaths to get this map. It is a path set out by them that I must follow and not deviate from. Who are they? They are known as The 3rd Covenant, they are Black shields and they are damned.”

Formsworth

cropped-gellath-logo.jpg

Scuttling along trailing parchment and ink, Formsworth is a peaceful soul who’s only interest is gaining more knowledge and writing it down. Over the decades he has recorded a great deal of information, some useless, most relevant to past events and some which are his own thoughts. These are the most interesting and sometimes amusing things to read and the other members of the band can sometimes be found trailing behind him reading his thoughts as he types them out and the parchment spills out from him. Formsworth of course is oblivious to this most of the time as he is so caught up in his own stream of conscious and doing laps around wherever they are stationed at the time. The booming laughter of his Lord Gale is the only proven thing that snaps him out of it.

Formsworth has been known to get rather excited when a new mission is about to start as it presents an opportunity to record details and give his own insight to the place they will soon be visiting, saving or sometimes destroying. In doing this he has a very detailed record of the war bands exploits and Gale has had to read through his ramblings to censure certain details. Words from a Daemons mouth are not something anyone should be able to read after all, also some of the deeds of the Inquisitor himself have become questionable and reams of parchment have been put to the flame in recent years. Formsworth doesn’t question his masters methods and keeps his secrets if he is asked but deep down in his kind heart he knows the fires that are about to be released may damn them all.

Pasfael

Gellath logo

Pasfael was a war priest of the Emperors Creed and has accompanied Lord Inquisitor Gale for decades and is his longest-serving companion, teacher and friend. How he came to be in the service of the ordos is unclear as it’s not something he or Gale talk about, in fact they go to great lengths to change the subject if the topic arises with Pasfael soon leaving the room afterwards. The others in the group soon found it was and excellent way to kill the conversion and would never warn new comers about it hoping that one day the truth may slip out as it nearly did on one occasion with a drunk and enraged Pasfael shouting and swinging his flail at Gale and cursing his name. He wanted revenge for something but Gale psyker punched him out before he said too much.

Not afraid to get his hands dirty, he is a sharp shot and his censer flail is a weapon of righteous destruction. His time with various fighting forces of the Imperium and now the Inquisition, honing his skills well. The main reason though for his recruitment into Gales retinue is their shared history and also his ability to see paths to a result that would otherwise have passed many by and Gale holds his council in the highest esteem. His relationship with the rest of the group is that of teacher and spiritual counsel and many have turned to him in times of personal crisis. He spends a lot of time with the psyker Mercy as her past has marked her so violently and he is always concerned with her well-being, and that of the others, when she is let loose on the enemy. The destruction she can cause when she let’s go is a scary thing to behold and Pasfael and Gale, on such occasions, have had a hard time reaching her to calm her down. The other he helps, but with growing concern, is the penitent Sister Sofiel. He tries to reach and rekindle her faith but the actions lately of his Lord Gale have made that mission all the harder and her soul is still split. As time moves on and more atrocities are witnessed, instigated or stopped, Pasfael has begun to wonder if his soul has split to.

The Third Covenant – I

3rd covenant quote

BSlord1

Gellath logo

Welcome to the first post for my army project, which is part of a bigger project ( note the logo above ) but more on that later. The Third Covenant. Black Shields fighting a bitter war for survival, redemption and vengeance. I love the idea of the Black Shields and wanted to put my own spin on them and bring them into the 41st millennium. They aren’t Chaos, they aren’t loyal but they sure as hell are all renegade and that gives them such wonderful scope for converting and character developement. This project has been brewing for some time and now all the pieces are coming together so I hope you enjoy the journey as much as I will putting it together.

So first up we have the Lord Scapha Ivmarus. He’s the leader of The Third Covenant and a bitter foe to all who stand against him. I wanted him to look really gothic, with his armour heavily modified after centuries of war and his face shrouded to add to his mystery. I’m particularly fond of the skull he’s holding as I think it adds to his character as a dark, morbid and intimidating leader. His axe in his other hand has the feel of executioner about it and it’s where he gets his name Reaper of Sorrow.
