Armies on Parade 2018

Hello all!

So last weekend was my local Warhammer Armies on Parade event and it was awesome. The turn out this year was higher than previous years and it was great to see some young bloods get stuck in.

Now I’ve been threatening Dave the manager with participating for at least 3 years now and so I thought it was high time I bit the bullet and have a go at it. I have to say that even though the pressure was high to get it completed on time ( I managed to get it all done in 6 weeks ) I enjoyed the sheer hobby madness of it all and if you’re thinking of doing it then I say get to it, you won’t be disappointed and it’s a great way to challenge yourself.

So how’d I do?…………………….Not half bad! I managed to get the awards for Best Theme, Best Army and Best Painted in the 40K category and took home silver in the managers choice. I even got a medal!

I have plans to expand the army as well with another 15 models to add in the future. My Black Shields will be a grim force to be reckoned with that’s for sure.

Here’s some pictures of my army with more to follow soon. I will take better ones of the squads and characters as well. Hope you like them πŸ™‚

This is the first ever primaris marine I’ve painted and I have to say what a joy they are to paint. There’s something very solid about them and I reckon it’s what Space Marines should have always looked like and to me it’s what they will always be, just Space Marines.

Converting them is very cool as well and with Lyco here I went to town, especially with his helmet. Β The base of it is a Blood Angel Sanguinary Guard helmet with all the bling cut off and a watch part, guitar string and dental implant screw green stuffed into place. Next I modified the gun slightly to give it a bigger barrel ( Lyco likes it loud! ) for this I dived into my dental days bitzbox again and used a scan body, which is made out of plastic covered titanium so its nice and light and also easy to paint. The rest was just adding skulls, shields and chains.

For the paint job I wanted him to look heavy and grim, with his gun being unadorned so it has a very brutal and practical look about it. I also applyed transfers from the Black Shield sheet from Forge World and painted over the top with washes to blend them into the armour. I’m not a massive fan of transfers but I must say that these are excellent and worked a treat. The rest of his decoration was free hand and of course a load of weathering to really give him that old worn, pissed off at everyone feel.

Now it’s onto the rest of the group.

The Caelistis Sisters

The other week I started work on another ][nq28 war band with the main characters being 3 sisters. Now I haven’t thought of any back ground for them yet but they will be involved with the business of Inquisitor Gale and his groupΒ ( info of which can be found here )

Any way let me introduce you to……

Caedicia Caelistis
Caedicia Caelistis. Inquisitor.
Caesinnia Caelistis
Caesennia Caelistis. Gunslinger
Caetronia Caelistis
Caetronia Caelistis. Psyker Abomination

The idea was to have them look like sisters but have them totally different in style. The Escher gang box came in handy for quite a few of the bits especially the heads and weapons and this is what ties them togehter as looking like sisters. The other two characters shown in the image below are a familiar who is bonded to Caetronia and a Black Shield Marine who has been assigned to accompany them on their mission.

Stay tuned for more coming soon.

The Third Covenant – II

The Third Covenant project continues with a scout squad. Lead by an ancient Apothecary and his trusted Sergeant. For the scouts I went old school in their look. I love the old scout models and I wanted to make my own up to date version of them. I think they look the part all action compared to Bato, who comes across as slow and purposeful, all shouty and grizzled. The Sergeant on the other hand looks ready to burst into action, silent and deadly, the perfect teacher for stealth.

The aim of this project is to have an army ready for Armies on Parade this year and so I’m building squad by squad with view to paint them all together over the last few months leading up to the deadline. Fingers and toes crossed I manage to do it.

Inquisitor Gale

Gellath logo

Gale studied the map with his cold eyes. This mission was going to be delicate and he had no room for error. A meeting had been set, probably the first of many he thought as a sense of dread poured over him. This was not a sensation he was used to so he made his way to his drinks cabinet and soothed himself with a glass of fine Amasec. Sighing he placed the glass down and looked out the window to the dark moon they were in orbit around. No one came to this moon unless they were mad, desperate or invited, Gale felt like all those things and for a moment doubt crossed him as to his resolve and that this, no matter how dangerous, was the right course of action.

β€œ Are you alright my lord?” said a soft voice behind him.

Gale turned to see Mercy looking at him. He hadn’t heard her enter the room, not that that was surprising she did hover around everywhere after all.

β€œ Yes I’m fine thank you Mercy. Have you rested well?” He asked.

β€œ Oh yes. As well as I always do.” She replied.

Gale turned back to the moon it’s darkness a shroud over everything on it’s surface. Mercy floated up next to him and said.

β€œ It’s a dark place my lord. It’s almost as if it consumes light itself. I can feel it to.”

Gale nodded. He was sure she could. Her mind was so much more powerful than his and also more sensitive. The moon was emitting something.

β€œ Explain to me what you feel?” He asked her.

β€œ Bitter hatred, shame and lose. It’s like the moon is trying to hide by not being welcoming. It’s telling me to stay away.”

Gale nodded.

β€œ I’ve heard tales that any one who lands here uninvited never leave. On Guylath I met a man who had told me of his great grandfather who got stuck out here and sent a signal which told whoever was listening that he will make a emergency landing on this moon. That was the last they heard of him. There were many stories like that on Guylath but no one really knows what happens on this moon as they are all too fearful of it and they are right to be as well.”

Gale picked up his glass and took another sip.

β€œ Who are they?” Mercy asked

Gale looked at her and held up the map for her to see.

β€œ It’s taken me two years and many Astropaths to get this map. It is a path set out by them that I must follow and not deviate from. Who are they? They are known as The 3rd Covenant, they are Black shields and they are damned.”

The Third Covenant – I

3rd covenant quote

Welcome to the first post for my army project, which is part of a bigger project ( note the logo above ) but more on that later. The Third Covenant. Black Shields fighting a bitter war for survival, redemption and vengeance. I love the idea of the Black Shields and wanted to put my own spin on them and bring them into the 41st millennium. They aren’t Chaos, they aren’t loyal but they sure as hell are all renegade and that gives them such wonderful scope for converting and character developement. This project has been brewing for some time and now all the pieces are coming together so I hope you enjoy the journey as much as I will putting it together.

So first up we have the Lord Scapha Ivmarus. He’s the leader of The Third Covenant and a bitter foe to all who stand against him. I wanted him to look really gothic, with his armour heavily modified after centuries of war and his face shrouded to add to his mystery. I’m particularly fond of the skull he’s holding as I think it adds to his character as a dark, morbid and intimidating leader. His axe in his other hand has the feel of executioner about it and it’s where he gets his name Reaper of Sorrow.

True Scale Trials

Hello all!

It’s been a while and I’ve been busy. While the Chapel boards take shape and the date draws near I have been busy with some other projects as well. One being an armour kit for making true scale space knights ( you like what I did there πŸ™‚ and it’s been a trial. The idea behind it was to create a multi part kit, which consists of 2x toe armour, 2x heal armour, 2x greaves armour, 2x knee armour, 2x thigh armour, waist, abs and chest armour. This would allow the model to be posed in a variety of ways and I’ve gone through various designs and fails but now at last I think I’ve done it. The images below show the final version all primed and ready for painting as well as a scale comparison.

TS trials1TS trials2

Assembling a model like this is fiddly business and it took me a while to figure out the method that worked best for me. You basically have to start from the ground up and have a clear vision of how you want it to look, I found reference material on poses helpful. The one pictured above is based on the standard marine next to it and I hope you agree that the pose looks more natural.

So the finished model in all his renegade glory. Once The Chapel is over I will be concentrating on my next project and that’s a True scale Black Shield army and this model was a trial one for the paint job. I’m pretty happy with how the black turned out and found it a reletively quick process. 1 marine = 1 day πŸ™‚

Cheers for looking.
