To call the Black Tide a ghost is true but it behaves more like an elemental force. It has been around since humans have inhabited The Chapel and so no one could tell you who it used to be, the only thing those who have survived it can agree on is that it isn’t just one soul but many.
It gets it’s name from the fact that it not only has a taste for souls but it also has a voracious appetite for pollution and other filth. Polluted areas are many within The Chapel as vast districts are given over to industrial use, where the fumes and sludge are at it’s highest levels and prone to outbreaks and spills. Many such incidents have happened over time and it is then that the Black Tide is at it’s most dangerous. It appears, like all ghosts, as if from now where and proceeds to suck up the filth, oil, fumes and waste at an alarming rate growing in size as it surges forward in a tide of unstoppable sludge and damned souls. Laughter, shouting, weeping and rage comes flowing out of it as the souls bound to it writhe within it’s mass and it soon floods the area consuming all you can’t escape and swatting aside those who attempt to shoot it with their puny weapons. One such incident will go down as the worst as the monster tide of death it became grew to such a size that it threatened to flood three whole districts in the southern area of the Hive. Many lives had been lost and in desperation some fool decided to use a flamer (see if you can guess who that was) Cackling with unsurpressed joy the Black Tide caught fire and with it so did three districts. The death toll and damage was huge and when the fires finally went out no sign of the Black Tide could be found. Those who survived thought it had been destroyed but in truth it takes more than just flame to destroy a ghost.
Other encounters with this hazard to your health have been small compared to that day and when it has disappeared it has been a mystery as to how. Much speculation and questions as to those responsible with some rare sightings of beings not seen before have been made but never answered. So the Black Tide remains lurking in the depths with it’s collection of souls feeding on the pollution that follows humanity where ever it goes.
On the plus side though, even after all the life loss and disaster, the places it passes through are left cleaner than they were……. Just don’t set it on fire.
The 5th Ghost has been the hardest to make and paint and for this reason has also been the most fun. Getting the movement right and the colours was a challenge as portraying surging pollution was difficult but the idea was in my head and I had to see it through. The result is pleasing and I’m glad I did, I hope you agree 🙂
Oh yes one more thing. To Mr Wudugast and The Ordo Mors I hope you’re ready for this particular pain bringer and I dare you to bring a flamer 😉
While most of the ghosts that float around in the depths of The Chapel are hell bent on depriving the living of life The Book Ghoul is only really interested in knowledge.
He can be found in the many libraries of The Chapel scribbling notes with his bone pen and his skull pot of ectoplasmic ink, while muttering to himself on how stupid everyone else is. You see this is his problem, he’s not violent but extremely condescending, patronising and overly insulting to all those he speaks to. So much so that many have walked away doubting their very existence and purpose in life.
If you can suffer him though the knowledge he can bestow is pricless. This leads to his next problem, the fact that he’s so damn hard to find! Because he thinks everyone is stupid and are better off killing theselves, he only likes the company of books and scrolls and information devices. He devours information, sucking it into him like a leech with blood and writing interesting parts down to add to his personal collection. It’s this collection of knowledge that those who have heard of him and seek him out want for it is said to contain the darkest of secrets of the early days of The Chapel from sources that have long since disappeared. This also raises the question of who he once was and how old he really is.
” That acid tongued wretch! How dare he tell me I’m no smarter than a rusted, squashed skull crab!!”
Inquisitor Dahan after meeting the Book Ghoul.
He later died by having a large part of a statue fall on him, which was shaped like a skull.
It’s been a while since I posted and like most people it’s all lifes fault and ghost 4 had been sitting on my bench for a while and so I thought I’d better finish him before my Ostium Guide. I hope you like him.
There is a lot to do still and there is more to come, mysteries about The Chapel to tell and models that you have all greatly inspired me to make. The Chapel is constantly calling and something ancient and evil will soon rise.
The Lash Banshee is a ghost of wanton mayhem and destruction. A pure entity of chaos and she revels in it. Once a Tech Witch of The Excoriator Cult she was caught in one of the many witch hunts that occur on the surface of The Chapel, her long lash like limbs tied around her, she was hung until dead. Her still lifless body was brought down and dumped in a hole in the ground and burried. This, as it turns out, was a massive mistake.
A Tech Witch must always be burned and she made her tormenters pay dearly for there oversight. Rising out of the ground her new found fury and power knew no bounds and as she slew the towns folk she came to the conclusion that they had done her a massive favour. She rather enjoyed this new unlife and has been a scourge on the living ever since.
The Lash Banshee appears to those who she feels will benifit from her presence, because you see it’s all a game and a bit of fun to help the living kill the living and some times people in The Chapel want a lot of people killed. These are joyus occasions to The Lash Banshee and she celebrates with over the top blood shed and haunting laughter, but she can get quite carried away and even those she is suposedly helping end up mangled. This is not much concern for her as she just shrugs her ghostly shoulders and dissapears into the gloom to find the next murderous soul.
This is the third ghost I’ve created for The Chapel and she was the quickest to make and paint so far. I wanted to be quite loose with the paint job, kinda blurry, to give an impression of movement. The pose helped with this too and the bits just seemed to work really well together.
Three down three to go! 🙂
The Chapel is a haunted place and so it’s unsurprising that there’s a few “disgruntled at being dead” ghosts floating around.
One such ghost is The Lady Marisa. This poor trapped soul spents her years floating around the many dark places of The Chapel looking mournful and preying on anyone who gets too close to one of her stacks of skulls she has littered around the place.
Like all the Ghosts her story is one of woe and betrayal and the eternal exsistance she is in has turned this once proud women into a monster of bitter anger streaked with intense jealousy of the living. This obviously has something to do with her possessive nature over her skull collections.
” Don’t get to close to the stacks of skulls you see laying around the place my boy. For your’s could join it “
This is the first of about 6 ghosts I shall be making for The Chapel. It was a great model to make and painting it allowed me to try a few colours out that I don’t usually use. I’m toying with the idea that each one should be a different colour.
