Mag Bellum information

Greetings hobby nuts!

So it’s exciting times here and I’m pleased to tell you all that the first wave of Mag Bellum tiles has hit the store! Yippie!! It’s been a hard old slog but I’m pretty happy with the design and the potential it has for war gaming.

Mag Bellum FB Banner2 851x315-01

Lets have a look at how you buy the sets.

On the Mag Bellum page you will see the payment buttons. The designs of the tiles are displayed here and how many you get of each in the pack ( total of 5 in each ) Selling them this way allows you to select the exact tiles you want to create your board it also has the added benefit of allowing you to spread the cost. Postage is included.

How many tiles will you need to create a board?

A 2ft x 2ft board will need 4 boxes to complete it as it uses 16 tiles to create it. This leaves an extra four tiles, which you can add to the board or leave as more variety for your games if say you are playing a campaign. This size board is perfect for Inq28, AoS28, Killteam or any other skirmish game you play.

Combining sets with your friends will make for battles being fought over many different grounds and themes and up to any size you wish with whatever layout you wish. The variety of boards that can be created are endless.

Extra plate sets.

A plate is the insert which sits in the tile it was made for. These plates are what you create your terrain on like buildings, trees, mounds, piles of rusty junk, objectives and so on. You can purchase extra plates to go with the tiles you already own creating more terrain possibilities for your games without buying the whole tile set.

If you haven’t already, head over to Facebook and like the Mag Bellum page and Instagram of the same name. I will be posting updates on those platforms along with images of boards and what you can achieve with the system.

And I shall leave you with some moody shots of a board I am creating.

Cult Limo

This project was on the back burner for a while. That was until Mr Wadu of Convert or Die said he didn’t like Genestealer Cult Limo’s. The shock of it right!? So I just had to move it up the queue and hope that my efforts will change his mind. If it doesn’t then no biggie, I love them and wished an offical one was released when they revamped the range but we got a truck instead, which is a cool kit, but not a Limo.

Any way. Without further ado here’s my Cult Limo. I do hope you like it and thoughts are always very welcome, especially on what colour it should be.

Mag Bellum

Hello folks!

So my tile system Mag Bellum is nearly ready for release. It’s been a bit of a ride getting here and after all the hard work I have to say I’m pretty happy with the way it’s turned out. This, the first edition of the system, will be available from the beginning of next week and I’ll be hosting the first Bellum Knights day on the 2nd of December, which will be held at The Museum of Futures in Surbiton Greater London, so if you are in the area or wouldn’t mind traveling to attend then please drop me a line. At these events I hope to have a group of gamer’s attend and play the games we love like Inq28, AoS28, 40K, AoS, Kill Team, Necromunda and Morheim all on the Mag Bellum tile system as well as other boards that will be created for campaign events. The aim is to have a Bellum Knights event monthly and hopefully in the future have workshops as well.

Well that’s enough prattling on for the moment let’s get to the pictures! They are all in moody black and white as it’s at the primed stage except the trees, which were painted by Alex and have been found on many a battle field.

setup4setup3setup6setup7setup10setup9setup8

This edition is the Skirmish and is 2ft x 2ft. It consists of 16 tiles, 7 of which are blank with the rest having plates that insert into their tiles. The idea is that you build your scenery on these plates so that the buildings or other terrain are not sitting on the surface ( you can do that to of course ) but look as if they are built onto the board. Extra plates and tiles will be available in packs of five as well so you can expand your board and add even more variety to a setup. Each tile is 150mm x 150mm x 6mm and is magnetized by 2 magnets on each side. This allows them to click into place nicely. Now because the magnets come unfitted I needed a way of fitting them into the tiles as they are small and fiddly and my first attempt at getting them in the right way was messy and frustrating with a lot of glue sticking my fingers to everything.  So I set about engineering a tool that will make this job easier and less messy.

Introducing the Mag-tool.

I will be doing an animation on how you use the Mag-tool soon but basically it allows you stick and then slide the magnet into place.

The main idea behind Mag Bellum though is that it’s designed to be a space-saving system, so after you’ve finished the battle you can just take the scenery off and stack the tiles away safely in their box. More on that next time but for now some more images of the board in a slightly different setup.

setup12setup14setup13setup16setup17

Well that’s it for this update. If you are interested then you can follow Mag Bellum on Face book and Instagram for all the latest updates plus info on up and coming events and campaigns.

Thanks for the support 🙂

The Chapel Box of St Ascerion

Hello one and all.

Some of you may have seen this already but this time it’s with more info!

I started making this box a while ago and the one you see in this post is the prototype of a kit. The idea of cool travel boxes is awesome, with the likes of Nicolas Grillet doing some truly inspired work and it got me thinking about making a kit that you can customize to create your own box of grim dark.

In this kit you get 8 wall sections that make 4 walls, 4 lid corners with inserts and a blank plate for the middle, 4 floor sections and 2 flag stones. You also get the wooden box that comes blank and ready for whatever staining or painting you wish and a steel plate that your magnetized models will stick to.

The design of the parts are pretty blank with only a few details, this is so you can use your own bits and textures to make it original. There’s lots of space to do so, the box is 29cm x 24.5cm x 15.5cm in size. Most of the kit is 3D printed in grey plastic with the rest of the parts cast in grey resin. This will change to fully cast in resin in the near future.

So there you have it. Now it’s on to making one for an order and depending on how busy I am they can take up to three weeks to complete. I will post an image of that order before it gets sent so you can all see it in its blank, hurry up and paint me, stage 🙂 Any questions please ask and if you are interested in one for yourself please contact me via email as found on my about page. The cost of these depends on where you are in the world as the postage for one can be hefty due to its size and weight.

Here’s mine, hope you like it.

Fembruary

Greetings.

Well it looks like this year could be the year of the monthly challenge. I think this is a great way to get things done and when Alex of the wonderful Leadballoony had the idea to make Fembruary I jumped at the chance. I have quite a few female models that need starting, like my Escher Gang, but I thought this needed something special so I broke out one of my Femme Militants.

So here she is my model for the Fembruary challenge, Varangii.

Display Tile 1

Welcome to the first display tile post. In these I will be showcasing my display tiles and showing a few w.i.p images as well with brief descriptions on the process.

The display tile idea came about so I could add to the narrative of my characters by placing them in particular scenes of note. The first of these are settings in which my new ][nq28 war band, pictured below, are taking part in.

Inq1

The introduction to some of these characters can be found in earlier posts with the rest to follow soon, if only there were more time in a day or better still a three day weekend! It’s only the beginning of the year and already I have a back log 🙂 Any way the stories have begun and the scenes are being made and I’m sure I’ll have them finished by mid year………or later 😉

So to kick things off are a few images of the first tile without any Photoshop parts added. I used one lamp from above to light it and white paper was used to surround it. This makes it easier to add the photoshop elements later.

DSC_0534DSC_0536DSC_0538DSC_0540

The materials used to create this tile are as follows.

GW bits. Parts from the tree kit and the flesh eater courtiers.

Scenery parts designed by myself, which can be found in the shop page.

Left over resin support bases from 3D printing. I’ve been trying to find a use for these for a while now because it’s such a waste and I’m loathed to throw resin away. So to use them as the textured floor worked really well and will do it again as I have so many of them.

Skulls, candles and random bits plus the usual suspects when texturing up a tile or base.

All was painted using washes and pigments with areas being drybrushed in grey and toned with washes.

Fake grass was added last in random areas.

Once I had the character placed right and the shot I wanted I open it up in Photoshop and began to create the background image. This one is of a worn ancient wall with a dark foreboding entrance and I used images taken on my trips to castles and various old or ruined stone structures I have seen over the years.

Although it takes a while I feel it adds to the process of a narrative wonderfully and is very rewarding. To have you’re characters placed in a scene it’s like a snap shot from a film.

Well there you have it. I hope you like it and any questions please ask.

An honour

Hello all,

Today I’d like to tell you about a pretty cool thing that happened about a month ago now and since then I’ve been working on it when I was able, but now it’s finished ( Hurrah ) it is time to share.

Its not every day you get to have a chat with one of your heros but this is what happened to me when John Blanche contacted me to say he really liked my work and was interested in a few pieces I had made. Conversation about all sorts was had and it ended with him giving me permission to make a model for him based on one of my favorite character images of his.

14066354_116054238845874_8460031160682640717_o

Now as you can imagine that truely made my day, month and year. It’s an honour to be able to turn one of his visions into a model and get to name it to. So may I present The Penitent of Sorrow. She who walks the ashes to redemption.

The model is 40mm scale and I hope you all approve as it was a joy to create. Now it’s onto printing it.

Children of Terra

“We’ve found it Zac! We’ve found the place grandfather told us about.”

Zac looked at it with unease. The place was dark and foreboding and the skull tree reached out with menacing branches of bone, pipes and filth. If the tree had any wood in it like the ones his mother had shown him from an old off world book she cherished then you couldn’t tell. Skull trees were everywhere down here and they seemed to grow from the very ground, bringing what lay beneath up through the surface and bursting into existence like a tumour of decay and pollution. They resemble trees but surely nothing natural could ever grow in such a place.

“Whats the matter with you? Aren’t you excited we finally found it?” Tilly asked him.

“Yes but it’s so spooky down here and it feels like we’re being watched.” Zac said.

“That’s just all the grinning skulls silly! I thought you’d be used to them by now.” Tilly said as she softly punched him on the shoulder.

Zac ingnored the punch and looked at what lay at the base of what must have been a column in ages past. It was ancient and rusted but there was no mistaking what it was. Tilly looked at it to and with whispered awe said

” The head of one of the God Emperors Angels.”

Zac just starred at it and made a promise to himself he will never touch it. It was a secret thier grandfather had told them before he had passed away. He had told them to find it would be a blessing upon them and they must keep it safe for the distant past should never be forgotten and the relics that remain should be preserved. He mentioned a great war, like the one they all learn about and said it is from that time. Seeing it now with his sister he could really believe it.

” Do you think others know of it?” he asked Tilly

” Nah. Gramps was a pretty secretive man and he has intrusted us with this knowledge and we must keep it. We are defenders of the faith now Zac!” Tilly said putting on her best I’m braver than anybody voice.

Zac smiled. He liked the sound of that.

” We need to come here as often as we can.” Tilly told him

” This can be our secret place. A place of safety where the Emperor can watch over us and we can play and pray. We will do good deeds in our life little brother and if we ever get lost we will know where to find each other.”

Zac smiled again and hugged his big sister. She was always so full of hope.

” Come on we need to get back. We will come back tomorrow.” She said holding his hand.

They began their journey back up through the layers of skull trees and pipes, filth and decay. The long dead of history watching them every step of the way.

CldT4

This is the second in a series that I’ve been chipping away at, the first of which you can find here

This one is called Children of Terra. It is about that old childhood thing where you found places to hide, to be alone, to be safe. Places that only you and your sibblings new about, the places we escape to. We have places like that in our older years and for many of you reading this it’ll be the man cave or garage, a bedroom, a place where we are at peace and so totally ingrossed in what we are doing that all of lifes cares and worries fade away for a while.

So this is what these kids have found and it has also given them a sense of purpose in what must be a very hard life. They have found a pocket of hope in a very hopeless world, but it is only a hope that a child could see.

Sinful Tiny Things

As well as Ghosts, dysfunctional servitors and the seething mass of humanity that inhabit the depths of The Chapel, you can find the little things that crawl, fly and creep around. They are many, and come in all sorts of appearances but the three main ones to be found are as follows.

From left to right

stt1

The Skull Crab, The Wraith Bat and  The Rat Devil.

All three can be found lurking in the shadows or running freely around and getting under foot or flying in your face and getting the crap scared out of you ( the Wraith Bats like doing this a lot ). A hindrance they can be but they can also be used to great effect.

divider1

stt4

Skull Crabs.

The Skull Crab can be found scuttling around fixing things, undoing things, replacing things and stealing things. No one know’s who builds them and there has been some speculation that one skull crab may make another and so on. This is of course an unnerving thought, because what happens when they get too many. Well that has already happened a few times in the history of The Chapel, one time in particular being the east side power plant that got over run with the tiny bastards. They systematicly went about dismantling the whole place and would have succeeded to if it wasn’t for the combined efforts of the worker gangs, which eventually stemmed the tide. A hunt was made soon after for any likely candidate you would have set such a thing in motion but none were found and so it remains a mystery as to why it happened even though it is still believed it was some plot to disrupt.

Another annoying thing about them is that they like to steal doors.

stt2

Wraith Bats.

Think homing pigeon but with the face of death. Yes that’s right these little flying monsters can be very useful for messaging. All they need is a message and a scent and off they go. It’s a talent they are very good at and it has been said that they can even fly through walls, which has never been witnessed so can’t be proven. One thing is certain though and that is they are filthy buggers and crap everywhere, they also have a tendency to fly in your face and scaring the crap out of you and then dropping something on your head, which may be a message or something else entirely.

They make good sport as well and many folk like shooting them.

stt3

Rat Devils.

The Rat Devils, or Rat Watchers as they can be known, are pretty inteligent and have been known to form gangs of their own, even aligning with a worker gang or other who they may benefit from. The reasons for this is usually territory as they don’t like it when the bigger folk start a fight that may result in their warrens being destroyed, if this happens they can get pretty frenzied and summon rather large rats to the cause, so it is not a bad thing to have a warren nearby but you do need to keep an eye on them. Some warrens may get too big and then the need for expansion starts and this often leads to contact with those around them. So homes can be over run, disease runs rampant and people die, which then leads to extermination or culling of their numbers until they retreat back.

You don’t want to feed them either as then they will never leave you alone.

divider1

Well that was a fun little part of The Chapel project and I hope the vision of what life is like in the depths is becoming clearer. I will be doing a post on the Albino Woods soon so the setting of the Ostium Guides and the Guild ( Thanks to Alex for that idea ) will take shape as it’s the first game to be played.

Keep the cool ideas coming!
