Mag Bellum

Hello folks!

So my tile system Mag Bellum is nearly ready for release. It’s been a bit of a ride getting here and after all the hard work I have to say I’m pretty happy with the way it’s turned out. This, the first edition of the system, will be available from the beginning of next week and I’ll be hosting the first Bellum Knights day on the 2nd of December, which will be held at The Museum of Futures in Surbiton Greater London, so if you are in the area or wouldn’t mind traveling to attend then please drop me a line. At these events I hope to have a group of gamer’s attend and play the games we love like Inq28, AoS28, 40K, AoS, Kill Team, Necromunda and Morheim all on the Mag Bellum tile system as well as other boards that will be created for campaign events. The aim is to have a Bellum Knights event monthly and hopefully in the future have workshops as well.

Well that’s enough prattling on for the moment let’s get to the pictures! They are all in moody black and white as it’s at the primed stage except the trees, which were painted by Alex and have been found on many a battle field.

setup4setup3setup6setup7setup10setup9setup8

This edition is the Skirmish and is 2ft x 2ft. It consists of 16 tiles, 7 of which are blank with the rest having plates that insert into their tiles. The idea is that you build your scenery on these plates so that the buildings or other terrain are not sitting on the surface ( you can do that to of course ) but look as if they are built onto the board. Extra plates and tiles will be available in packs of five as well so you can expand your board and add even more variety to a setup. Each tile is 150mm x 150mm x 6mm and is magnetized by 2 magnets on each side. This allows them to click into place nicely. Now because the magnets come unfitted I needed a way of fitting them into the tiles as they are small and fiddly and my first attempt at getting them in the right way was messy and frustrating with a lot of glue sticking my fingers to everything.  So I set about engineering a tool that will make this job easier and less messy.

Introducing the Mag-tool.

I will be doing an animation on how you use the Mag-tool soon but basically it allows you stick and then slide the magnet into place.

The main idea behind Mag Bellum though is that it’s designed to be a space-saving system, so after you’ve finished the battle you can just take the scenery off and stack the tiles away safely in their box. More on that next time but for now some more images of the board in a slightly different setup.

setup12setup14setup13setup16setup17

Well that’s it for this update. If you are interested then you can follow Mag Bellum on Face book and Instagram for all the latest updates plus info on up and coming events and campaigns.

Thanks for the support 🙂

Stylites Comp and Terrain

Hello all.

So the Stylites comp deadline has passed but I’m going to extend it. The final date will be the 15th of November 2018. This I hope will allow all you busy people the chance to finish or even begin your entry for the comp. The prize of which is this giant skull crab.

P1030457

The other reason is that I’ve been so busy with life and other projects that I’ve not had the chance to create my own Penitent, which is just shocking and I’m not having it 😉

So take your time for a bit and come up with some truly deranged characters. For inspiration you should head over to Leadballoony and see what Alex, my partner in crime on this project,  has been up to. He made some pretty sad and debased denizens of The Chapel for this game.

stylites banner1

To finish things off today I have some images of the Stylites kit that will be hitting the shop for those of you who are interested buying a set to play the game. Or, if you are inclined, you can just make your own. The rules are free and can be found here.

The kit is designed to come apart so you can store it away easily

Please keep in mind that if you do order a set it may take a while to arrive as I’ve got to make them to order and being a one man band that can take a while. I aim to have kits done in a two-week turnaround per order. Also note that the magnets and poles are not included, the reason for this is time ( they come from China ) and to keep the cost down. They can be sourced from Ebay easily. Search for – White ABS Styrene Plastic Strip Tube Round Bar Rods Square Bar Rod 250mm Length, 10mm Diameter x 10. For the magnets – N35 (13x6x1.5mm) Strong neodymium block magnets.

If you are outside UK and Euro and want a kit then please email me and we can arrange postage costs.

Thank you.

The Flea. Skull – Jacker

Hello all,

This little fella is my Skull-Jacker. He is known as the Flea. He can’t remember who he used to be only that he can jump pretty well now and likes to annoy penitents while fixing the shiny skulls that hover around the place. Life is pretty simple for Flea, that is until another Skull-Jacker gets in on his turf. Then Flea gets angry and has an over whelming desire to insert his mechandrites in places they would find most uncomfortable while drilling holes in them. Flea also likes to bash them off the Stylites and watch them hit the ground, he finds the sounds they make most satisfying.

Flea is still Flea so he thinks he’s quite good at his job. This makes Flea very smug and more annoying.

Flea took me about 2 hours to paint and I’m pretty pleased with the outcome. Nothing flash but very grim. The way I like my ][nq28.

In the months to come I will make a few more Skull- Jackers and Penitents for the Stylites game and I look forward to seeing people’s characters for the competition. Here’s a little reminder of what you can win. Animation done by Black Edge 3D

Stylites Revealed

Hello all you lovely hobby goblins!

Today I have a treat for you all. I few weeks ago I hinted at a thing called Stylites and now it is the time to reveal what it is.

stylites banner1

‘Stylites’ is a fast paced ‘push your luck’ mini-game set in the Chapel – a mysterious edifice set in the grim darkness of the far future. In this game, you take on the role of an intrepid skull-jacker – one of the deep denizens of the Chapel, and you are tasked with maintaining the servoskulls within your territory. The problem is, your territory consists of whole caverns filled with stylites – towering poles topped with tiny platforms, where ascetic penitents live out their days trying to atone for their sins, (both real and imagined). The servoskulls that you service float among these platforms, monitoring the penance of these strange individuals, so doing your job involves death-defying leaps from platform to platform, and dealing with the unhinged penitents who live on them… As if that wasn’t difficult enough, rival ‘jackers are trying to encroach on your turf, and turn your precious servoskulls against you!

stylites banner2

It’s a game and a free one at that. You will be able to find the downloadable rules later on in the post, but first a little bit about the creation of the game. Stylites means ‘ pillar dweller ‘ and I liked the word and what it meant so I had the idea that I would make a whole board of these things, just because I thought it would look cool. But how to play on such a board? So the idea of making rules came to me. Help was needed on this little quest and I contacted Alex of the leadballoony variety and we arranged a much-needed catch up with some dice throwing. So we set about making a game. It took us most of the day with playtesting as well and even with the most ones I’ve ever seen someone roll in all my life we managed to have a few good games where Alex didn’t just fall off his Stylite. With the basic rules all done we returned to our lives with duties to fulfill. Alex was to write the rules out and I was to create the board and the scenery to go with it and providing Alex with the same scenery to create his own board. Something to look out for soon.

THE BOARD

Below is the board I created. Its 2 x 2 and can be arranged in different ways. The platforms can be turned to add more variation as well. Also the Stylites themselves come off so it is easy to pack away.

I also made a measuring tool to go with it. All nice and dirty!

CHARACTERS

You have the scene, now on to the characters. But wait, I have none to show you. That’s because, my hobby nuts, its competition time!! All you need to do is come up with two characters, a Skull Jacker and a Penitent with a paragraph written about each. The rules are as follows.

1 : Characters must be on a 25mm base.

2 : GW bits only.

3 :  Posts must be linked to this page. Instagram # stylites.

4 : Must be submitted by October 31st.

5 : Final images and the fluff must be sent to my email, which you can find in my about page.

PRIZE!

So whats the prize I hear you say……… Well this is.

A BIG SKULL CRAB!!! This creepy mechanized monster stands at 40mm high and can be used to mount big guns on, carry around a suitably deranged character of your own devising, or just left how it is. It comes in two parts and is made of resin and was produced at Black Edge 3D.

So get cracking on those characters! I look forward to seeing what you all create and then judging you on it ;P

THE RULES

Stylites rules

It’s a pretty simple game and can be played quickly. Any feed back is welcome as we plan to expand on the basic rules.

And if you are interested in having a set of Stylites you will be able to order them from my shop pages very soon. ( I’m away in August for two weeks ) The complete set consists of all the pieces pictured below x 20, or you can purchase just the platforms and create your own.

Please allow a few weeks for me to make them as I have to cast them to order.  Either way I hope you enjoy playing it and good luck to all who take part in the competition.

Next Stylite post. Battle report!

Brother Lyco Celer

This is the first ever primaris marine I’ve painted and I have to say what a joy they are to paint. There’s something very solid about them and I reckon it’s what Space Marines should have always looked like and to me it’s what they will always be, just Space Marines.

Converting them is very cool as well and with Lyco here I went to town, especially with his helmet.  The base of it is a Blood Angel Sanguinary Guard helmet with all the bling cut off and a watch part, guitar string and dental implant screw green stuffed into place. Next I modified the gun slightly to give it a bigger barrel ( Lyco likes it loud! ) for this I dived into my dental days bitzbox again and used a scan body, which is made out of plastic covered titanium so its nice and light and also easy to paint. The rest was just adding skulls, shields and chains.

For the paint job I wanted him to look heavy and grim, with his gun being unadorned so it has a very brutal and practical look about it. I also applyed transfers from the Black Shield sheet from Forge World and painted over the top with washes to blend them into the armour. I’m not a massive fan of transfers but I must say that these are excellent and worked a treat. The rest of his decoration was free hand and of course a load of weathering to really give him that old worn, pissed off at everyone feel.

Now it’s onto the rest of the group.

The Chapel Box of St Ascerion

Hello one and all.

Some of you may have seen this already but this time it’s with more info!

I started making this box a while ago and the one you see in this post is the prototype of a kit. The idea of cool travel boxes is awesome, with the likes of Nicolas Grillet doing some truly inspired work and it got me thinking about making a kit that you can customize to create your own box of grim dark.

In this kit you get 8 wall sections that make 4 walls, 4 lid corners with inserts and a blank plate for the middle, 4 floor sections and 2 flag stones. You also get the wooden box that comes blank and ready for whatever staining or painting you wish and a steel plate that your magnetized models will stick to.

The design of the parts are pretty blank with only a few details, this is so you can use your own bits and textures to make it original. There’s lots of space to do so, the box is 29cm x 24.5cm x 15.5cm in size. Most of the kit is 3D printed in grey plastic with the rest of the parts cast in grey resin. This will change to fully cast in resin in the near future.

So there you have it. Now it’s on to making one for an order and depending on how busy I am they can take up to three weeks to complete. I will post an image of that order before it gets sent so you can all see it in its blank, hurry up and paint me, stage 🙂 Any questions please ask and if you are interested in one for yourself please contact me via email as found on my about page. The cost of these depends on where you are in the world as the postage for one can be hefty due to its size and weight.

Here’s mine, hope you like it.

The Caelistis Sisters

The other week I started work on another ][nq28 war band with the main characters being 3 sisters. Now I haven’t thought of any back ground for them yet but they will be involved with the business of Inquisitor Gale and his group ( info of which can be found here )

Any way let me introduce you to……

Caedicia Caelistis
Caedicia Caelistis. Inquisitor.
Caesinnia Caelistis
Caesennia Caelistis. Gunslinger
Caetronia Caelistis
Caetronia Caelistis. Psyker Abomination

The idea was to have them look like sisters but have them totally different in style. The Escher gang box came in handy for quite a few of the bits especially the heads and weapons and this is what ties them togehter as looking like sisters. The other two characters shown in the image below are a familiar who is bonded to Caetronia and a Black Shield Marine who has been assigned to accompany them on their mission.

The Caelistis sisters and war band1

Stay tuned for more coming soon.

Penitent Poles

Greetings all!

I’ve been away from the hobby for a while due to getting married in Oz last month and all the life comings and goings that goes with it. Now though I’m back on it, and oh how I’ve missed it 😉 Also it looks like I have loads to catch up on to. You busy bunch!

So to kick things off I’d like to introduce a concept for a game called Penitent Poles but before I do let me introduce a couple of misguided loons.

The penitent poles

These two used to have the holy task of maintaining servo skulls but after many years they have lost their minds and now they jump from penitent pole to penitent pole capturing servo skulls and messing with their protocols before sending them on their way to do god knows what to who. Insanity rules the Imperium of man so they say and these two wayward souls are testament to that.

Right so the game will go like this : Two teams of three take to a board made up of penitent poles with the aim to knock off or kill each other. Sounds simple yes? But wait, servo skulls will be floating around the place. You will be able to capture these and set them against your enemy but your enemy can recapture them and turn them back against you also. This will be determined by a series of dice rolls which I’ll think on a bit more. To add to the mayhem some of the poles will be occupied by penitents and these are best avoided but that’s not always going to be the case and you may find yourself tackling a truly insane soul hell-bent on killing you for disturbing his/her penance.

Obviously this still needs a lot of thought but I think it’ll be great fun and games will be quick as the board won’t be that big. I will be creating mine starting now as this is a precursor to the next Chapel, which I have also been working on.

So any thoughts or suggestions are welcome and once it’s all done I’d like the opportunity to knock a few of you off your poles 😉

CYBERPUNK 40K. Bringing the neon to the grim dark.

cyberpunk40k

That’s right! I want to bring out the elements of 40K that are totally Cyberpunk. Why? Because I love Cyberpunk and with the release of Necromunda it is the perfect playground for such a thing.

First off, if you want to know more about Cyberpunk, have a read of this article on the subject. It’s well written and will give you a nice overview of the history of the sub genre and the films that were produced that shaped the style.

So recently I’ve been going back to my roots of sci-fi with the main focus on films like Akira, GiTS, Blade Runner and Johnny Mnemonic as well as artists like Simon Bisley, Kev Walker and Brom. Also the new releases on Netflix like BLAME, The Expanse and Altered Carbon have all got me thinking about applying cyberpunk themes to 40k and creating a gang of characters that are so wonderfully over the top and Cyberpunk that it hurts. Now 40K has a lot of Cyberpunk imagery already, just have a flick through Rogue Trader and you’ll see what I mean, so it is just a matter of focusing on the styles and colours that define Cyberpunk and bring them into the grim dark. As far as models are concerned the new plastic Necromunda models suit the imagery perfectly, as they should being largely inspired by what came before, but other manufacturers of miniatures will be used as well, along with my own designs that I’ll 3D print.

First up we have this lovely lady. Poison Shade. She’s bad, really bad. A pumped up, psycho poser with cannibalistic tendencies that loves blades and more blades, especially ones covered in poison. She’s quick, acrobatic and extremely strong and loves nothing more than being dominant over everyone, especially men, whom she’s been known to eat for breakfast with a nice hot mocha after killing them with her butt cheeks. Miss Shade is all scary and has made a living from being so. Hire her at your peril and desperate men beware. So ladies and gents cover your crotch as I present…………..

poison shade banner

PS1

The main influence for this character came from the art of Simon Bisley. I’ve been a great lover of his in your face art for many years and I remember as a teenager being totally in awe of his style. His depictions of characters are wonderfully insane and so very over the top, especially his women characters. They are exaggerated to the point of being grotesque but even so you can’t help but look and you end up feeling dirty for doing so. No wonder I loved his work as a teenager 🙂 His art also possesses a vibrancy, a toxic overload of colour, which compliments his larger than life characters perfectly. That’s what I have tried to achieve with Miss Shade here. A toxic psycho you wouldn’t want to meet in a dark ally while boozed up and fiddling with your fly. You know it’s all going to end wrong.

PS2

This will be an ongoing project with no real-time limit and if any of you lovely creative readers want to get involved and poke some fun at 40K then please feel free.
