Sofiel

“ Sister Sofiel. It is with a heavy heart that I exile you from this most righteous of orders and send you on a personal crusade of redemption. Your actions have shown that your soul is impure and so, with only your armour and blade, you are herby banished and condemned to live the life of a penitent. Go now and die in whatever fashion your soul deems right.”

Those words still rang in her head even after all these years. To be shunned by her order in such a fashion left her bitter and torn. Were her actions that day so wrong? Pasfael has said that life isn’t so black and white as some in power think and after spending some time in the Inquisitors retinue she could see that. Actions that would be deemed wrong have had the most positive of outcomes, whilst some have just led to more disaster, but surely to do nothing would be the worst action of all. If she did nothing that day thousands would have died instead of hundreds. She sacrificed her sisters and herself to save innocents. The fact that she survived instead was a cruel joke, oh how she wished she had died with her sisters, she should have died there! Then she wouldn’t have to live with this shame.

She buried her head in her hands and flinched when she felt her scares the physical proof of her impurity. She ran her hand over the rough texture of her skin.

“ If you play with it too much you’ll go blind.” Came a metallic voice from behind her.

She turned around to see the savant Formsworth looking at her.

“ What do you want Formsworth?” She asked in a slightly irritated tone.

“ I want for nothing dear lady, I have given up all that I was so I could be all that I am.”

She smiled a little at that. She liked Formsworth, he was gentle and wise and always smelled of ink and parchment, but it was the way he spoke that was most endearing. You always had to look for the hidden meaning in some of the things he said.

“ The sooner you accept that the same as happened to you, the sooner those scars you carry will heal. Your face on the other hand….. Well your stuck with those I’m afraid, but they will become softer to your eyes in time.”

Sofiel nodded and said

“ Pasfael has said the same. Time heals all…. What do yo want though? Has our Lord Gale summoned me?”

“ He has summoned us all my dear sister in grey. We are to discuss our next move and the implications of such actions. I’m afraid this may test us in the extreme.” His metallic voice almost sounded excited. “ Come on. “ He said as he shuffled away trailing parchment as he went.

Sofiel looked down and thought to herself that she is always being tested. How could she heal her broken faith. She considered that maybe, no matter what Pasfael said, she is never meant to. Maybe the Emperor is testing her, but all it feels like is a series of events that have left her lost and split in half. Only when she was slaying did she feel at peace. All thoughts focused on the hate of those she killed and not the shame in her heart.

“ Come on!” Formsworth called “ Sacrifice is expected!”

She took a deep breath and walked out of her quarters it seems there would be no end to the sacrifice. Only in death will duty truly end.

Pasfael

Gellath logo

Pasfael was a war priest of the Emperors Creed and has accompanied Lord Inquisitor Gale for decades and is his longest-serving companion, teacher and friend. How he came to be in the service of the ordos is unclear as it’s not something he or Gale talk about, in fact they go to great lengths to change the subject if the topic arises with Pasfael soon leaving the room afterwards. The others in the group soon found it was and excellent way to kill the conversion and would never warn new comers about it hoping that one day the truth may slip out as it nearly did on one occasion with a drunk and enraged Pasfael shouting and swinging his flail at Gale and cursing his name. He wanted revenge for something but Gale psyker punched him out before he said too much.

Not afraid to get his hands dirty, he is a sharp shot and his censer flail is a weapon of righteous destruction. His time with various fighting forces of the Imperium and now the Inquisition, honing his skills well. The main reason though for his recruitment into Gales retinue is their shared history and also his ability to see paths to a result that would otherwise have passed many by and Gale holds his council in the highest esteem. His relationship with the rest of the group is that of teacher and spiritual counsel and many have turned to him in times of personal crisis. He spends a lot of time with the psyker Mercy as her past has marked her so violently and he is always concerned with her well-being, and that of the others, when she is let loose on the enemy. The destruction she can cause when she let’s go is a scary thing to behold and Pasfael and Gale, on such occasions, have had a hard time reaching her to calm her down. The other he helps, but with growing concern, is the penitent Sister Sofiel. He tries to reach and rekindle her faith but the actions lately of his Lord Gale have made that mission all the harder and her soul is still split. As time moves on and more atrocities are witnessed, instigated or stopped, Pasfael has begun to wonder if his soul has split to.

“You are touched to, I can tell you have a keen mind.”

The girl sat on a plush bed, surrounded by expensive dolls and other such toys. She was beautiful but wore a rather large amount make up, which made it hard to discern her age. The man who stood before her looked at her through the bars with a mixture of sadness, pity and intrigue.

“You have killed them all then?” She asked.

“ No, not all of them.” He responded.

She cocked her head and stared at him. He stared back. There was something about this girl and it wasn’t the fact that all her limbs except one, her right arm, were withered or just stumps it was something else. She continued to stare as she played with an ornate necklace of rather chunky design. When he saw a red light flicker on it he asked.

“ You are one of his daughters then?”

She nodded.

“ The one no one is ever to know about. Yes.” She replied

“ You have been held down here since you were born haven’t you?” He asked

“ Yes. I am the shame of my family” She said with sadness in her voice.

“ Trust me my child your families shame runs deeper than just keeping you locked up down here.” He stated.

He was thinking about what to do with this strange girl when his comm came to life in his ear.

“ My lord we have found them. The pitiful remains of this damned family.”

“ Is he with them?” He asked.

The comm crackled.

“ Yes my lord, he is.”

“ OK, I am on my way.” He responded.

He looked back at the girl and was about to leave when she said.

“ You must take me with you.”

He turned back.

“ Why?” He asked

“ I can help you in many ways and get you the many secrets my father has. I also need to be the one to kill him. Please do not deny me that, not after all he has done to me. Free me from my cell and then free my mind and I will show you.”

She toyed with the necklace again.

“ This is a limiter. It imprisons my mind, but you already knew that, didn’t you?”

“ I did.” He paused for a minute in thought and after a while he said.

“ If I release you from your bonds would you pledge yourself to me and the higher calling I represent. Would you pledge your body and soul to the me and through me the God Emperor.”

“ I will. With all my heart I will.” She answered.

“ Then my child I may have a use for you in the great work and I will show you things no sane person would wish to see, but something tells me you already know of such things.” He said

He stood back and drew his hand gun. He took aim and started to blast at the locks on her prison cell. After a while he broke them down and stepped through.

“ How do I release the limiter?” He asked.

“ Anyone can do it except me my lord. It has been designed that way.” She said with a slight smile.

He bent over and found the deactivation switch and unclasped the limiter from around her neck. As he slid it off she rose up off her bed laughing with such joy at the sudden freedom she felt as her mind was unleashed from its bonds.

“ Oh thank you Inquisitor! Thank you so much!!” She shouted

He stumbled back stunned by the power of her mind as it flooded into his. So raw, so wild. She was laughing uncontrollably and through blurred vision he noticed that the dolls and various other toys began to melt and catch fire. Her cell would soon be an inferno, so through pure will and clenched teeth he managed to say.

“ We must go!”

And with his mind.

— We must go!! —

She looked down at him and stopped laughing. Floating down to his level she looked him in the eye.

“ I am sorry my lord. It has been so long.” She said with a smile,

“ I am ready to go now, take me to my father and I will be your servant but first I must get the knife.”

“ The knife?” He asked

“ I shall explain on the way.” She told him.

“ What is your name child?”

“ My name is Mercedes Elvorix, but you may call me Mercy.”

The Knife

The corrupt house of the Elvorix family held many secrets and had many items of dubious origin displayed throughout. One such item was a knife. Known as the Semita Blade it was said to date back to before the great heresy and it was also claimed to be used by a traitor of those times. This of course was enough information the Lord Elvorix needed and bought it from one of his many contacts straight away, little knowing what the blade truly was.

When his daughter Mercedes was born the knife had been proudly on display for years in one of the many halls of his home. After the shock of her arrival had passed and she was imprisoned in luxury in a cell underground, the knife, unknown to the family, became active and stayed that way for decades, waiting in it’s glass box. Years before her father found out about his shame of a daughters mind she had already sensed it and new it for what it was and desired to wield it. She knew she was becoming powerful and tried to hide it from her father. But one morning when she came to after being drugged, raped and beaten she found her mind bound as much as her feeble body was. So it was that she stayed confined in more ways than one until the day came when she would be free and would have her revenge on her evil family. She made a promise to herself that it would be done with the keen edge of the knife.

The Semita Blade is simple in design and has no gilt or other ostentatious decoration, but you can see that it is made in an exact way. The precision of it’s making is a thing of wonder and many who have studied it at one of Lord Elvorix many seminars say it’s not of human manufacture and dating the age of the blade with any accuracy was also hard to prove. The material used to craft it was just as baffling. It is a metal that when tested proved to be a different metal every time. This has intrigued many an expert in this field and was proclaimed it was almost as if the knife didn’t want any thing to be known about it.

The truth was only known to Mercedes so when the time came and fate played it’s hand to her damned family in the form of a burly Inquisitor and his retinue, she pledged allegiance to him and asked only that she take the knife as the memento of her time trapped in that cursed house and that she could be the one to kill her father. The Inquisitor agreed and took her to deliver her fathers fate.

On the way to get the knife she told him how she was bonded to it and only she knew how to wield it.

Mercedes is a powerful Alpha class psyker and when she slowly slid the blade into her fathers chest the full horror of what it could do made itself known.

“ I should thank you really father, for if you didn’t keep me locked away I would be as

tainted as the rest of you.

Oh hush now. Your screams of pain are nothing compared to what you put me through,

but I assure you father you shall know pain. Oh yes. Like no one else.”

The blade began to rip reality as she poured her hate for him into it and the warp began to manifest itself inside her father and slowly piece by piece it consumed him from the inside out. The rest of her remaining family, the Inquisitor and his retinue looked on in horror and disgust as his tainted soul was laid bare and eaten by sickly bladed daemon teeth of the warp. Mercedes simply looked on with a triumphant smile.

Even today on that very spot where The House of Elvorix once stood the walls of reality remain thin and it has become a haunted place. If you linger long enough you can still hear the tormented screams of her father from the death curse inflicted by the knife as he was made to suffer for all eternity.

It’s all been slow going but today I thought I’d share a glimpse at what’s been going on concerning The Chapel project.

The images below are from The Albino Woods part of the game.

+++ ][ +++ ][ +++ The Chapel has called + ][ ++ 1 ++++ ][ +++++ ][ ++++ ][ +++

” My name is Lucia, that is all you need to know right now.”

Lucia reaches into a pocket and produces a small black box. The man sitting across from her raises an eyebrow.

” You are here because I’d like to hire you as your talents would be of great use to me in the coming months, if not years.”

She slides the small black box across the table. The man looks at it for a minute and then takes it.

” I’m sure you have seen one of those before?”

The man smiles, it is not a warm smile, and says.

” Yes Inquisitor Lucia. Or should I call you The Death Widow.”

A smile spreads across Lucia’s face. A smile he cannot see.

” So you have heard of me then?”

The man puts the box in his inside pocket.

” Oh I’ve heard of you and I’ve heard of your ways.”

The hidden smile spreads further across her face.

” Well then it should come as no surprise as to why I am asking for your services. So can I count on you being you?”

The man chuckles and says.

” Oh yes Inquisitor you can count on that.”

” Excellent. We shall leave once we have confirmation from the others.”

” Others?”

” Yes my murderous friend, others, and if you think I’m bad then just wait till you meet them.”

The Black Tide

To call the Black Tide a ghost is true but it behaves more like an elemental force. It has been around since humans have inhabited The Chapel and so no one could tell you who it used to be, the only thing those who have survived it can agree on is that it isn’t just one soul but many.

It gets it’s name from the fact that it not only has a taste for souls but it also has a voracious appetite for pollution and other filth. Polluted areas are many within The Chapel as vast districts are given over to industrial use, where the fumes and sludge are at it’s highest levels and prone to outbreaks and spills. Many such incidents have happened over time and it is then that the Black Tide is at it’s most dangerous. It appears, like all ghosts, as if from now where and proceeds to suck up the filth, oil, fumes and waste at an alarming rate growing in size as it surges forward in a tide of unstoppable sludge and damned souls. Laughter, shouting, weeping and rage comes flowing out of it as the souls bound to it writhe within it’s mass and it soon floods the area consuming all you can’t escape and swatting aside those who attempt to shoot it with their puny weapons. One such incident will go down as the worst as the monster tide of death it became grew to such a size that it threatened to flood three whole districts in the southern area of the Hive. Many lives had been lost and in desperation some fool decided to use a flamer (see if you can guess who that was) Cackling with unsurpressed joy the Black Tide caught fire and with it so did three districts. The death toll and damage was huge and when the fires finally went out no sign of the Black Tide could be found. Those who survived thought it had been destroyed but in truth it takes more than just flame to destroy a ghost.

Other encounters with this hazard to your health have been small compared to that day and when it has disappeared it has been a mystery as to how. Much speculation and questions as to those responsible with some rare sightings of beings not seen before have been made but never answered. So the Black Tide remains lurking in the depths with it’s collection of souls feeding on the pollution that follows humanity where ever it goes.

On the plus side though, even after all the life loss and disaster, the places it passes through are left cleaner than they were……. Just don’t set it on fire.

The 5th Ghost has been the hardest to make and paint and for this reason has also been the most fun. Getting the movement right and the colours was a challenge as portraying surging pollution was difficult but the idea was in my head and I had to see it through. The result is pleasing and I’m glad I did, I hope you agree 🙂

Oh yes one more thing. To Mr Wudugast and The Ordo Mors I hope you’re ready for this particular pain bringer and I dare you to bring a flamer 😉

Wytch Cult

” Two hundred years ago this pict was taken.”

Reanna Fleetfoot handed the old pict to the Master Guides sitting before her in a semicircle. They each in turn looked at it and then looked at each other.

wc pic

” We are aware of this image. It was also documented that the monster was killed around the same time. Why do you bring this to us?”

” A survivor my Lords.”

” A survivor from where? Please Reanna get to the point! ”

” The man was found about fifty miles west from here and when I passed through the town  of Acre Hill recently the folk pleaded to me to hear him out. They were extremely fearful and some of the older folk were talking of daemons and wytch cults.”

At the mention of those words the Masters began whispering to each other. Reanna waited to speak again. After a moment the whispering stopped.

” Tell us what this man said”

” He claimed his village was attacked and destroyed by monsters from the deep woods and that many village folk were taken and many more were flayed. He told me the village was called Greybush and which direction it lay. I left the town at that point to find this village. What I found was destruction and murder of the most cruel nature. I then returned and asked to see the man again. I asked how he survived such horror and he said he was returning from hunting when the attack happened. He watched the whole thing knowing he couldn’t do a thing about it. He then fled to Acre Hill. My lords the man described a monster that is a likeness for the one in the image”

” Impossible! The beast was slain, the reports tell us it was cleansed by fire!”

The whispering started again and lasted many minutes. Reanna stood still head bowed waiting for it to stop. When it did.

” Reanna you are a very inquisitive, clever and honest guide and over the years you have brought many incidents to our attention. On this instance though we will need more proof. If you can bring it to us we will act with all our influence. Bring us the survivor first, with force if need be. You may go.”

As Reanna Fleetfoot left the hall the whispering started again.

” What if she is right?

Then the histories got something wrong”

We didn’t tell her about the two missing guides, last seen around that area.”

” We will if her findings are true.”

” If the Wytch cults are active again and that monster is leading them with such brazen displays of carnage then we have a real problem on our hands.”

” Then we will deal with it as we always have, getting the guides to lead a traveller group of significant force and ability right to them and force confrontation. Even if they get killed they would have dealt a severe blow to those monsters and we can always guide more to finish the job.”

” That’s right we know there is a considerable rise in travellers seeking entrance to The Chapel.”

” That is worrying in itself! So much activity can only mean things beneath our feet are going to get worse.”

” The Call has been sent then?”

” I believe it must have, it’s the only explanation.”

” Then we must be ready. Things will escalate quickly and we have our role to play.”
